FAMILY VIOLENCE, HOMICIDE & TRANSFORMATIVE JUSTICE
In 2017, the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) supported a 2-year project on transformative justice and family violence. This research resulted in a book and a knowledge transfer zine to support community-based risk assessment for high-risk intimate partner violence. You can read more about it here.

Preventing and Addressing Family Violence: the Health Perspective
Family Violence Online Programming in Rural and Remote Areas of the Atlantic Provinces.
With support from the Public Health Agency of Canada and Dalhousie University, this project is led by Catrina Brown and brings together a team of researchers with expertise on rehabilitation for abusive behaviour to assess the effectiveness of a ‘Safety and Repair’ healing program for rural and remote areas. You can find out more about this project here.
COERCIVE CONTROL LEGISLATION
Coercive control is a high-risk form of family violence. Although this kind of abuse is associated with high rates of intimate partner homicide, there is widespread misunderstanding (and misinformation) in criminal justice systems and in non-profit organizations that support survivors, about what coercive control is and which interventions are appropriate and safe for victims.
In Fall 2023, Ardath provided expert consultation on behalf of a coalition of researchers, survivors and anti-violence organizations to Justice Canada in response to a private member’s bill calling for new (and tougher) laws to combat this kind of abuse. Our coalition drafted an open letter opposing this new bill and advocating, instead, for a transformative public health approach to high-risk family violence. You can read our letter here.
